Venezuelan and Brazilian paleontologists discovered fossils of a sea turtle that existed 12.2 billion years ago, said Friday the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC). The remains correspond to the skull of a species of the extinct genus Bairdemys and similarities with freshwater turtles Arrau, who inhabit the plains of southwestern Venezuela and are at risk of extinction, according to a report IVIC. The skull of this specimen -bautizado as B. Thalassica, from the Greek meaning thalassa framework is "almost complete and in excellent preservation," the IVIC. The discovery was made in a cave called El Miedo, located in the state of Falcon (west), by researchers at the IVIC and the University of Sao Paulo, who explained that the fossil was partially encased in a layer of limestone. "The group that probably belonged B. thalassica was the ecological equivalent of current Carettini sea turtles (Caretta caretta)," said Venezuelan Ascanio Rincon, co-author of the study, quoted by the IVIC.
